Record A Story, And Save It Forever

Record a Story 'Twas the Night Before Christmas
I'm a sentimental person, so when I learned you can record the voice of a loved on on a story book to create a story-reading keepsake for your child, I thought this was one of the best ideas I ever heard. Record a Story allow you to record yourself (or a loved one) reading a story to a child that can be listened to over and over as well as kept as a keepsake. These beautiful, hard-cover books are filled with lovely artwork and allow the reader to record their voice, and protect the recording with a lock feature that prevent accidentally recording over it.

Some titles available in the Record a Story series are ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Guess How Much I Miss You, Sesame Street: Together at Heart and Dora the Explorer: Exploring Memories. We had the opportunity to review 'Twas the Night Before Christmas with grandma, who had a good time reading the book to our little guy while we recorded her.
Easy to record pages. Lock feature inside battery compartment
The hard-cover is slightly padded, the book is strongly bound, the art is colorful and festive, and each page starts with a jingle before the words are read. When we first received the book, a pre-recorded voice read the story, which is good if you are not sure how the story is read or how some words are pronounced. Once you are ready to record it yourself, simply press the record button and read. When you are done, press stop, and your narration is read back to you for your approval. If you are happy, start the next page. If you want to redo it, press record and start reading again. When you are done with the entire book and the dedication page (where you can leave a special message just for the child), open up the battery compartment to turn the lock on, so that no one will accidentally record over your voice.

Record a Story can bring separated families together. It’s a great product for working moms and dads who travel a lot, divorced parents, or for grandparents who live far away. A child can always hear the voice of a loved one reading them a bed-time story, thanks to Record a Story.

Publications International, Ltd., recently launched a new program called Operation Record a Story on Veteran's Day 2010. Military moms and dads away from their children are able to share story time as a family, because PIL donated thousands of Record a Story™ books to the United Through Reading® Military Program for deployed service members to record for their children. Recordings take place at 10 USO centers and United Through Reading locations in the United States and in the Middle East. The books, together with a video of the parent recording the story, are shipped to kids in time for the holidays. In all, PIL is donating 5,000 Record a Story books.

If you'd like to purchase a Record a Story, they are available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com, as well as other retail stores. You can also donate to United Through Reading and help bring military families closer together this season.

  1. We have a book like this - my uncle recorded himself reading The Night Before Christmas and my 3yo LOVED listening to it. It is a fabulous gift idea, especially from a relative that doesn't get to see the little one very often.

  6. I actually bought one from Hallmark two years ago when I first saw "Twas The Night Before Christmas". I had my Mother (who lived with us at the time) record her voice reading it. I am so glad I did, she passed away last September, but my kids have the book with her voice that they listen to all throughout the year. I LOVE them! I would buy another in a heartbeat.

  9. I love this idea! It makes me teary eyed. I really want to record my grandma reading a story so that my son will have it to hold on to - one of my best memories of growing up has always been her reading to me.

  10. I think these book are so neat. We only see my MIL 4 or 5 times a year, so this would be great for her to record for my son. I can think of several situations where this would be so special to a child. Thanks for sharing!
