Summer Reading for Children- Review

Looking for some great new books for the kids to read this summer? Abrams Books for Young Readers has lots to offer, starting with a brand new book called Dotty, about a girl who starts school with her imaginary friend in tow!

Dotty by Erica Perl is a picture book about a girl named Ida who has a spotted imaginary friend with horns that she takes to school with her. Ida meets many students with their own invisible buddy, but as time goes on many start to leave their imaginary friend behind- except for Ida, that is. She wonders if this happens to everyone eventually, until she meets a teacher who understands (because she has a secret of her own!). Imaginative and fun, Dotty is a great book for children starting school or will in a year or two, and will increase their enthusiasm for school. If your child has an imaginary friend of their own, they will especially like this book. The artwork is terrific, including a glittery and whimsical, fun pencil drawings throughout.

The Exceptionally, Extraordinarily Ordinary First Day of School by Albert Lorenz is about John, the new kid at school who, when asked about his old school, creates fantastical tales (fibs) to impress the librarian and fellow students, such as his old school was a castle, and worms were available for lunch. While his tales are funny, the tips and fun facts throughout this book are the real treat. Each page is a large comic, and a sidebar expands on terms or gives really interesting information that kids would love to learn about the Sphinx, the moon, Pandora's box, tidbits about flies or skeletons, and much more. It calls nosepicking a favorite past time everywhere, and encourages children to have an interest in famous figures of the past, science, etc. This would be a great gift for children 6-10, and they'd find it hysterical to boot.

Library Mouse: A World To Explore is about Sam the library mouse who learns about the importance of teamwork with his new friend Sarah. Sam loves to read and write, but tends play it safe in the library. One day he meets Sarah, who loves to explore all corners of the library, but doesn't know much about writing or research. The two new friends team up to encourage eachother to be better mice- Sam learns to get over his fears and explore the big world of the library, and Sarah learns more about the places she visits thanks to Sam's teaching her about reading about new places. This book is great for children who can read, and the adventures of these clever mice include riding a toy airplane and great games of pretend as Pharoahs of Egypt, and much more.

Miss Tutu's Star features Selena, a little girl who isn't your typical ballerina. She isn't graceful, and struggles a bit with the steps, but in her heart Selena wants to dance, and through hard work, dedication, and the support of her mom and ballet teacher, finds that dreams can come true. This fun tale is told in rhymes and funny pictures, and is sure to have your daughter laughing. Miss Tutu's Star is by Leslea Newman, the author of Just Like Mama (a book I love!).

Finally, All the Seasons of the Year celebrates the power of love between mothers and children.By bestselling author Deborah Lee Rose, the lyrical short story follows how much a mama cat loves her little kitten throughout the seasons of the year, with verses like: "I love you when springtime breezes through- when everything smells so sweet and new"...."I'll always love you, and hold you dear, through all the seasons of the year". How beautiful is that to read to your child and let him know how much you cherish him? This would be a great to read together at bed-time when tucking him in for the night.
