Children's Books Celebrating Mommies and Daddies~ Review

I love children's books, and I love reading to my son. I recently had the opportunity to review some new books for children from Abrams Books, and they were really darling. Each of these three books had two themes in common- first, a focus on the relationship between a parent and child, and second, being filled with beautiful or interesting artwork and illustrations.

Great Children's book
The first book was a real delight. Called Just Like MamaChildrens Books, it's about the special bond between a little girl and her mama. More specifically, it's about the admiration and adoration a daughter feels for her mom, the woman she views as having that special touch, whether to make pancakes taste extra special, or make playtime extra magical. An excerpt from the book:

A peanut butter sandwich with the crusts all cut away and a swirly straw to sip my milk served on a silver tray. Nobody makes lunch just like mama.

Filled with pretty artwork and vibrant colors that would appeal to little girls, this is a great book for a mom and daughter to read and share together. Just Like Mama retails for about $15.95, and would make a sweet gift for a mama for Mother's Day (she can have special times reading it to her daughter, and it will remind her of the influence she had over her child, who looks up to her and aspires to be like her). It reminded me of times I had with my own mother as a little girl, and my feeling of ecstasy when she polished my nails or let me stir the mix when she baked.

The second book (probably my favorite of the three) is about a daddy and his daughter, called Because I Am Your DaddyQuality Childrens Books. It's about a father's love for his daughter, but really it's the love of any parent for their child. When I read it to my son, he loved the photos, which have the ability to really inspire the imaginations and fantasies of children. In fact, the illustrations, by Marcellus Hall, astounded me. Images of a tree that opens up to a futuristic treehouse or travelling around on books like magic carpets fills the pages of this book as daddy and daughter travel (with the little girl's doll) on all their adventures.

This book offers dads the opportunity to express their love to their daughter. Each page offers another charming expression of daddy's love. Written by Sherry North, who teamed up with Hall once before to write Because You Are My Baby, this book about the unconditional, enormous love of a father for his child retails for about $15.95, and would be a great idea for Father's Day. I plan to look for more books illustrated by Hall, because they were that great. (The above photos are cropped and don't show the beautiful illustrations fully).

The third book has an interesting twist. Mama, Is It Summer Yet?Father's Day gifts for dad is written and illustrated by Nikki McClure, who also illustrated the New York Times bestseller All in a Day. Retailing for about $17.95, the book is about a young boy asking his mom when summer has arrived, and her replies indicating the signs of summer when present. Signs such as leaves unfolding and buds swelling are explained to him. The artwork is tri-chromatic and done by an intricate cut-paper technique in which McClure continuously cuts without lifting breaking the line, until the entire picture is complete. I can't even imagine how this was done- it sounds very complicated, so the result is that much more amazing.

Abrams Books offers these books (and many others) for Mother's and Father's Day this year, and would make nice additions to your child's library. They can be found on Amazon or at Barnes and Nobles.
