Joy Berry Children's Books- Review

books for children
Joy Berry is the best-selling author of more than 250 books, which have sold more than 85 million copies world-wide, and is also an accredited elementary school teacher. She believes (and I agree) that "Children should be 100% responsible for all of their choices and decisions by the time they are 12 years of age." She believes that in order for this to happen, parents need to encourage their children from an early age to learn to make choices and decisions- and the right ones!

Berry's Living Skills product line targets toddlers to pre-teens, and have become veritable classics due to their endurance and popularity over 30 years. I was contacted to review a book series from the Classics Product line, which include the following:

- Teach Me About (ages 1-3)
- Let's Talk About (ages 4-5)
- Help Me Be Good (ages 5-7)
- A Fun and Easy Way (ages 7-10)
- Winning Skills (ages 11-12)
- Good Answers to Tough Questions (ages 6-12)

books that teach children values
I chose the "Teach Me About" series, which includes books about potty training, bath time, meal time, getting dressed, bed time, and illness, for children 1-3. The books are illustrated with photos of tots happily bathing, eating, and potty training, and this series comes with 2 CD's of sing-along songs and read-along tracks (the song lyrics are included on the back of each book). Each song has several versions, (lyrical, instructional, and performative) in different styles of music, to make listening and singing along even more fun and engaging. Song titles include "A Toilet Is Not Scary" (lol), "I Won't Be Bad In The Tub", and "Excuse Me" (teaches manners!). The reading level of the books is very basic and easy (appropriate for this age group)...for example: "I get sick when I get too tired. I rest when I am tired. Rest helps me stay well."

The books can be purchased individually (each comes with a CD), as a set, or even as a kit...the potty training kit (comes in a version for boys or girls) includes progress charts, helpful hints and instructions, a push-n-play button (that says "You did a great job!" when pushed), and a diploma.

This is a great series to add to your child's library, especially since learning about these activities (all children need to learn to potty train, get dressed, and will likely get sick at some point) should be part of the basic education of all children at this time in life. It's a terrific way for parents to spend time teaching their children and having fun together too. Later series, such as "Let's Talk About" and "Help Me Be Good", focus on character development (I did not review these for this review, but these look like terrific books parents with children ages 4-7 may want to take a look at). Good answers to Tough Questions deals with issues such as divorce and death.

The Joy Berry product line includes books, read-along and music cd's, kits, and more, and can be found at her web-site JoyBerryBooks.com.

  5. Karm and Sharon, I never heard of her before either, but these are great for the basics for kidlets. I would love to get the potty training kit when it's time for my son to potty train, and the books for older children look like they'd be great too (though I didn't see these, so I can't give an actual opinion on them yet)
