I always ask couples how they met. To me, it's such a fun memory for most people, to look fondly back (sometimes 30 or 40 years) at a time in their life that was really special for them. I have heard so many beautiful tales of serendipitous meetings, love at first sight (my dad's story), or even funny near misses that luckily worked out. I also love to think about my own courtship, and what a fun, special time it was in my life, so if you have a moment, while drinking your morning coffee, come take a walk with me down memory lane (a trip back to just over three and 1/2 years ago)....
♥ How I Met My Husband ♥
When I met my husband, he was a volunteer firefighter/EMT, and I just started as a volunteer EMT. I had to take training classes for six months, and in the meantime I was to report to my local firestation twice a week for further training with the firemen/EMT's already working. It was at one of these meetings that I first met my husband. I saw him (tall, dressed in an NYPD t-shirt, talking to his friends). He seemed really friendly and outgoing, and I thought "He seems like a nice guy! Very happy!" He was making his friends laugh with a story.
He started walking toward the group of newbies (probees in that world, short for probationary members) and introduced himself. He did a double take when he saw me, and for the rest of the meeting kept coming toward the probees to chat- but always facing me, no matter who he was talking to. Around him, others were smiling and giving eachother knowing looks.

It took more than a month for him to ask me out- he always seemed so nervous around me (this otherwise confident, outgoing guy). He asked in roundabout ways if I was seeing anyone and would hint he'd like to meet someone like me. One day I told him I had some great friends for him, and showed him photos- he picked a friend who looked just like me. I told them I would set them up, and he hesitantly agreed.
As the day for their date approached, he seemed more and more anxious and doubtful, until finally (two days before their date) he called me and said, "You know what, I'm just going to ask. Would you go out with me?" I said, "Ok" and he cheered, "Woo, hoo! Oh, and I never wanted to meet any friends of yours, so tell that girl 'sorry' for me".
Our first date was a not very memorable movie, but his nervousness the whole date was. He was really sweet, and too nervous to even try to kiss me (he blushed a lot as the end of the date approached). We said our good-byes, and he called the next day, and the next, and every day thereafter.

And that is the story of how we met (that my son will one day read). I would love to hear any beautiful love stories any of you have to share, so please leave me a comment or email me if you would like :)

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I met at a prayer meeting in the city. We worked for the same company and the Christians of that company would meet every lunch hour at the church building for prayer. After that he said that he would always volunteer to take things from his suupervisor to my department just to see me and speak with me. We didn't get together until years later but that's how we met. How we got together is the funny and romantic story. Too long for this comment.
Well, I'd like to hear the story one day :)
