Loukoumi- Children's Books That Teach Values

I am building up our baby's library, and I came across some great books that I really love. The first book (it's the third in a new series of children's books) is called "Loukoumi's Good Deeds" by Nick Katsoris and it's about a little lamb named Loukoumi who learns how wonderful it is to do something nice for others each day. She and her friends find joy in helping others, visiting grandparents, and doing good deeds. It's a really enjoyable book for young children.

This book comes with a CD that features the voices of some well known stars today, including Olympia Dukakis, Jennifer Aniston (though this won't matter to your baby :) it's encouraging that celebrities see the value in these books and help support them) and others, reading the parts of the different characters. The CD also features an additional story called "Loukoumi's Gift" (it teaches that gifts do not need to cost a lot to have value) and a narration of a previous story revised, "Growing Up Loukoumi".

The author is donating two dollars from the sale of each of the Good Deeds books to research for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. He has been involved in other charitable activities as well, such as founding and presiding over the Hellenic Times Scholarship Fund, and sponsoring the Growing Up with Loukoumi Dream Day contest (three winners had their ultimate dreams fulfilled, such as playing soccer with the New York Red Bulls and visiting NASA to watch the Phoenix spacecraft land on Mars). How terrific is that!

His other books are fabulous too, and the whole collection is the start of my baby's personal library.

  5. Visitng from SITS and I'm glad to see you building the baby's library now. Wonderful. The teachers at my oldest's school has exclaimed over and over that they wish more parents had a library at home and READ to their children.

The "Everyday Blessings" looks like one I need to pick up. Thanks!

  8. Keitha, you're welcome.

Shelley, welcome, nice to meet you too! Wow, that must be hectic, owning a pharmacy. Before starting my sabbatical, I was working at a privately owned pharmacy...it is a never ending job for the owners!

I agree, books as gifts for children is a GREAT idea! The book on manners sounds good (it's never too early to learn good values *or* manners). I recently went to a friend's shower, and on the invitation it said "bring your favorite children's book!", and the room was decorated with the books of the arriving guests. So cute!

  18. Oooh I love books! Do you do reviews often? If so I'll follow you.
We just found a cool book called Uno's Garden - perhaps you already know it, if not check it out. My 3-year old loves it. It's about sustainable building and not crowding out plants and animals; and also about maths!

    Here from SITS.

  19. Visting from SITS! Two of my favorite books that I bought when pregnant with my first baby were:

God Gave Us You by Lisa Tawn Bergren. Mama Bear tells Baby Bear how important he is and how much he was wanted...

And, Mommy Loves Her Baby/Daddy Loves His Baby by Tara Jaye Morrow and Tiphanie Beeke. It's a flip book made for mommy to read one side and daddy the other. It tells baby that mommy/daddy loves baby more than different animals and their habits. Really cute!

I'll have to review these 2 on my own blog!! :-)
