The Exergen Temporal Thermometer is an easy to use forehead thermometer when you need to determine if your baby has a fever. It's as accurate as rectal or oral thermometers when used correctly, and it's more accurate than taking temperature with an ear thermometer or under the arm. It provides a read-out of your baby's temperature within seconds, and there is no discomfort involved, which is great for parents who hesitate to use rectal thermometers (like my husband). Best of all, it can be used on a sleeping baby, so you don't have to struggle trying to keep a thermometer in your baby's mouth or tug on his ear to get a temperature.
The Exergen TemporalScanner reads temperature by capturing naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery as it is swept gently over the forehead. It takes 1,000 readings per second and selects the most accurate through its Arterial Heat Balance system. It is not affected by environmental factors such as drinking a cold glass of water or skin blood flow changes, which can affect oral or axillary (underarm) temperature, making them less reliable.
The TemporalScanner can be used for patients of any age, and the fact that this digital thermometer is not invasive makes it a practical choice if your baby is vomiting, suffering from diarrhea, or has an ear infection, any of which can make taking temperature orally, rectally, or tympanically (by ear) difficult and possibly painful.
The Exergen Temporal Scanner is manufactured in the US, and because it uses infrared sensor technology, there is no worry about mercury. There are no covers that need to be purchased, and can even be used if a baby is sweating (it does not interfere with it taking an accurate temperature- you simply take the temperature on the neck behind the ear instead of across the forehead). We tried it with our son, and found it very easy to use. With a three month old son, it's virtually impossible to take his temperature easily orally (he keeps pushing the thermometer out with his tongue), and I never feel secure that I'm getting an accurate temperature tympanically. It's a great thermometer for general use, and especially for babies and children. It is more affordable than most ear thermometers, and more comfortable to use with little ones than rectal and oral thermometers.
Buy it! The Exergen TemporalScanner Thermometer usually retails for about $35, and a $5 rebate coupon is available from Exergen. It can be purchased on Amazon, at Wal-Mart, Babies R Us, Costco, and many other major retailers.
Win it! Exergen is kindly giving a follower of Penelope's Oasis an Exergen TemporalScanner Thermometer of their own! To enter, tell me how you currently take your child's temperature, and don't forget to leave an email address where you can be reached if you are the winner.

I just got one of these for my three boys (ages 4, 2, and 6 months) and I love love LOVE it. It makes temperature-taking so much easier, and the accuracy gives me peace of mind. :)

I actually just have a cheap digital thermometer that I use to take my kids temp orally (they're old enough to not bite thermometer etc). I've used a temporal scanner thermo at work (I'm a nurse) and love them though!

We currently use an ear thermometer. I also have one that can be used under the arm. I hate them both. My daughter runs if she sees either one of them coming her way.

We currently use the old fashioned method and take their temps rectally - this would be so much nicer!
